WordPress 3.0: proof open source kicks butt
WordPress is one of the most popular open-source content management systems in use on the internet. But despite WordPress’ popularity, one knock against it has been the fact that it’s always been more a ‘blogging engine’ than ‘true’ CMS.
Yesterday, WordPress took a big step toward achieving ‘true’ CMS status with the release of WordPress 3.0. That’s thanks to several of the new features it contains.
The two most important features in this respect are:
* Custom post types. In previous versions of WordPress, content was either a ‘post’ or a ‘page’. But in version 3.0, developers have the ability to easily create post types of their own (eg. events, podcasts, etc.). Each custom post type gets its own section in the WordPress administration area. This not only makes it easier to manage different types of content on the back-end, and easier to display it on the front-end, but with a little bit of extra work, developers can customize how content for custom post types is added in the administration area.
* Custom taxonomies. WordPress has supported custom taxonomies for some time now, but in WordPress 3.0, custom taxonomies are taken to the next level. Now, fully hierarchical custom taxonomies can be added, making it easier to organize and group content and to display it to users in meaningful ways.
With these new features, WordPress may now be a viable option for projects it wouldn’t have been in the past, as developers will not have to reinvent the wheel to access functionality that is largely expected in a traditional CMS. From a competitive standpoint, WordPress may now be able to hold its own versus Joomla (and to a lesser extent Drupal) with certain kinds of projects that it realistically wouldn’t have before.
Of course, the fact that WordPress has evolved in this fashion isn’t entirely surprising, as larger open source projects have proven to be quite responsive to the demands of the market. This can be seen with two of the most popular open-source RDBMSes, MySQL and PostgreSQL. MySQL, which began its life as a lightweight database solution, has over the years become a much more robust offering, adding features such as ACID compliance. And PostgreSQL, which began its life as a robust, ACID-compliant offering, has become far more nimble.
If past is prologue, and WordPress 3.0 is but the latest evidence, developers can expect better and better open source solutions going forward.

How to foil Web browser ‘tabnapping’
Computerworld – A new, incredibly sneaky identity-theft tactic surfaced earlier this week when Mozilla’s Aza Raskin, the creative lead of Firefox, unveiled what’s become known as “tabnapping.”
Stated simply, tabnapping — from the combination of “tab” and “kidnapping” — could be used by clever phishers to dupe users into giving up passwords by secretly changing already-open browser tabs. All of the major browsers on Windows and Mac OS X are vulnerable to the attack.
Because most people keep multiple tabs open, often for long periods, and because they trust that the contents and label of a tab are immutable, tabnapping could become the next big thing in identity theft.
That open tab labeled “Citibank” or “Facebook” may not be the real deals, Raskin argued. But you may not know that…, so you enter your username and password to, you think, log in again.

Google offers free fonts for the Web
By Stephen Shankland, CNET
May 20, 2010 — Updated 1335 GMT (2135 HKT)
In an attempt to move beyond drab typography on the Web, Google on Wednesday released 18 freely usable fonts and an open-source tool designed to smooth over browser issues in displaying downloaded fonts.
A number of Web designers — if not all readers — are excited that newer browsers support downloadable fonts so sites can use more than the handful that it’s safe to assume are installed already on people’s computers.
For every eyeball-searing grunge font and blood-pressure-raising instance of Comic Sans, there’s a tasteful use of an artful logo or distinctive text.
But font licensing rules mean a Web designer can’t necessarily upload any old font for a site. This is where Google’s move, announced at its Google I/O conference, comes in. The company released 18 fonts and also announced an interface that lets Web sites use them.
“Google has been working with a number of talented font designers to produce a varied collection of high quality open source fonts for the Google Font Directory,” said Raph Levien and David Kuettel of the Google Font API team in a blog post. “With the Google Font API, using these fonts on your web page is almost as easy as using the standard set of so-called “web-safe” fonts that come installed on most computers.”
The way to Web fonts was paved with the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) formatting standard and more recently the Web Open Font Format technology that helped encourage Web typography support from traditional font licensing companies.
But even with those foundations, there are copyright concerns that might put off Web developers.
Google’s fonts are free of copyright restrictions, though.
“Since all the fonts are open source, you can use them any way you like. We also have a separate project hosted on Google Code for downloading the original font files. Since they’re open source, they can be used for just about any purpose, including for print,” the Google font team members said.
In addition, Google announced an open-source project called WebFont Loader to supply Web developers with code to deal with differences in how browsers handle downloaded Web fonts.
The software, a collaboration with Small Batch’s TypeKit project, includes JavaScript code to control how Web pages display types for a uniform experience across different browsers, Google said.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer losing browser share
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) web browser, now accounts for less than 60% of the market, down from 95% at its peak in 2003, according to new figures.
Latest statistics, from measurement firm NetApplications, show that IE has 59.9% of the market, with Firefox gaining on it, with 24.5%.
While third-place Google Chrome’s 6.7% share of the market looks tiny by comparison it is rising sharply, up from just 1.7% this time last year.
A new version of IE is in development.
Microsoft has gradually been losing market share, largely due to concerns over security, experts said.
Viable alternatives
Measurement firms tend to agree that IE is losing market share although the percentage share of rival browsers is more hotly contested.
In the UK, research firm Nielsen suggests that IE still commands 70% of the market, with Mozilla’s Firefox on 18%. It does not include figures for Apple’s Safari.
It still shows a downwards trend for IE, losing 6% of market share since last year.
This could be due to more awareness of rivals, thinks Gartner analyst Jeffrey Mann.
“There are more viable alternatives now. Google has been advertising and there are more people using Macs and Apple’s Safari. There is just a great awareness that there are alternatives,” he said.
Recently people using version 6 of the browser were advised to find an alternative due to large security holes.
It may shift loyalty away from Microsoft, thinks Gartner analyst Jeffrey Mann.
“There were a lot of people using IE6 and some will have said that if they are going to change, they may as well look at some alternatives,” he said.
Microsoft introduced browser choice to European Windows users in March.
This was the result of a ten-year dispute with the European Union over the fairness of IE being installed as the default browser on billions of computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Now customers get the choice of 12 browsers.
But this is unlikely to have affected current market-share figures thinks Mr Mann.
“That is only just beginning to kick in and is likely to have a minor effect overall. It will see some really small browsers getting a lot of prominence,” he said.
For rivals to IE it is going to be a “long, slow rise”, thinks Mr Mann, as Microsoft remains dominant.
And with the release of version 9 of Internet Explorer, the battle could really hot up.
IE9 promises to support HTML5, the next-generation standard for coding web pages, which aims to reduce the need for software plug-ins, such as Flash.
Apple remains a key rival for Microsoft in the browser market and it has seen its Safari browser gain market share but the two rivals are united when it comes to supporting the HTML5 web standards.
Apple sees HTML5 – along with other technologies such as the h.264 standard for video – as a replacement for Flash and has been involved in a high-profile spat with Flash owners Adobe.
Apple has banned Flash from many of its products.

Google Gives Its Search Results a Facelift
Google is making some very noticeable changes to its familiar search results pages, rolling out the changes gradually on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The search giant is adding a new left-handed navigation panel to most results pages, adding some visual clutter at the expense of offering users tools to help focus their query. What will show up on this new left panel depends what a person is looking for.
Search for a type of media — say the latest episode of “Gossip Girl” — and you will get the option to choose between different content types, like images, videos and books. Search for an event or news topic, like “Times Square bomb,” and the search engine will intuit that this is a news-related query and offer options to look at blogs, real time updates from sources like Twitter and Facebook, and links to news articles.
Search for a product, like “Levi’s jeans,” and the left side of the page will offer links to maps and Google’s comparison shopping engine.
For some searches, Google will also show a link to its “Wonder Wheel,” which users previously had to click a few times to find. That feature, which the company introduced last spring at its Searchology conference, offers a visual representation of related searches.
A final category of links along the new left panel, called “Something Different,” will suggest related topics — like other basketball teams when a person searches for “Boston Celtics.”
Along with a slightly more colorful and spritely Google logo, the changes are some pretty radical cosmetic surgery for Google. Have a look at some examples and tell us what you think.
